Transcript of the Story
After his baptism, Jesus chose 12 men to be his disciples, his closest followers, and he traveled through the country teaching people and his disciples about God’s kingdom.
One time they traveled through the land of the Samaritans. Now the Samaritans were despised by the Jewish people. As they were coming up to a town around noon Jesus was tired and so he sat down by a well and rested while his disciples went into town to buy food.
As Jesus was sitting there by the well resting, a woman came out to get some water and Jesus asked her for a drink. She said, “How could you ask me a Samaritan woman for a drink? Your people don’t have anything to do with mine.” Jesus said, “If you knew who was asking, then you would ask me and I would give you living water.” The woman replied, “You don’t have a bucket. Where are you going to get this water? Are you greater than Abraham who dug this well?” And Jesus said, “Whoever drinks that water, they’re going to be thirsty again, but whoever drinks my water will never be thirsty again. It will give eternal life.”
Well, the woman asked, “Oh, please. Give me some of this water so I’ll never get thirsty. Then I won’t have to come back to the well. Jesus response was to tell her to go and get your husband. The woman said, “I don’t have a husband.” Jesus responded, “You are right. In fact, you’ve had five and the man you’re living with now, he’s not your husband either.” She responded, “Sir, you must be a prophet. I know that when the Messiah comes, he’s going to explain so many things to us.” And Jesus said, “I’m him.”
So the woman ran back into town and he began to tell everyone she saw, “Come and see a man who told me everything I’ve done, could he be the Messiah?” So the town’s people went out and they begged Jesus to stay with them. And for two days, Jesus and his disciples stayed, and many of the Samaritans believed in Jesus. Afterward, they told the woman, “We don’t believe in him just because of what you’ve said, but because we’ve seen for ourselves, we now believe that he is the savior of the world.”
